SPAY AND NEUTER SERVICES IN WINNIPEG

Every pet parent wants their pets to have a healthier, happier, and longer life. At Rivers Animal Hospital, we understand this. That’s why we recommend getting your canines and felines spayed and neutered. We have a team of skilled, experienced, and caring veterinary doctors who offer safe spay and neuter services in Winnipeg. Neutering removes the testicles of a male animal, whereas spaying involves removing the uterus and ovaries of a female animal. This routine procedure offers several health benefits to your furry friends. If you have questions about the process or need more information, please get in touch with us. We will be happy to assist you.

BENEFITS OF NEUTERING YOUR MALE CAT OR DOG

Neutering male cats or dogs involves removing the testicles. It will reduce your pet’s sexual activities and aggression. Neutering offers several behavioural benefits, along with improving the health of your furry friends. Some of the expected benefits of neutering include:

  • Reduced risk of cancer: One of the most common types of cancer in male cats and dogs is testicular cancer. By getting their testicles removed during neutering, your canine and feline friends are no longer exposed to the disease. Additionally, it also eliminates the risk of prostate infection.

  • Reduced spraying in cats: Male cats tend to spray at home as a sign of marking territory. This behaviour is driven by hormones and can be controlled by neutering them.

  • Reduced aggressive behaviour: Unneutered dogs and cats can be aggressive as they undergo hormonal changes. A neutered male dog may be calmer and less aggressive. A neutered male cat will experience a reduced desire to roam and fight.

BENEFITS OF SPAYING YOUR FEMALE CAT OR DOG

Spaying is a surgical operation that removes the ovaries and uterus from female cats and dogs, preventing pregnancy. In addition, this procedure reduces the risk of cancerous tumours in the reproductive organs later in their lives. Spaying can help your pets live longer, healthier lives. The benefits of spaying your female cat or dog include:

  • Decreased risk of cancer: Spayed female cats and dogs are free from the chance of getting uterine cancer. They are also less prone to urinary tract infections and other disorders.

  • An end to the heat cycle: Going into heat causes undesirable behavioural changes in female cats and dogs, such as urinating at various places in the house, getting aggressive, and howling. Neutering would put an end to the behavioural changes caused by the heat cycle.

  • Reduction in overpopulation: Spaying will prevent unwanted pregnancies, reducing the number of pups and kittens in shelters.

PROCEDURE FOR NEUTERING YOUR MALE CAT OR DOG

During the neutering procedure, your pet will be anesthetized, and their vital signs will be monitored. The veterinarian will make a small incision in the front of the scrotum. Each testicle will be removed, and the blood supply and the spermatic cord will be tied off. The veterinarian will then close the incision with sutures. Your pet will need a minimum of two weeks to heal.

PROCEDURE FOR SPAYING YOUR FEMALE CAT OR DOG

During the spaying procedure, your pet will go under anesthesia. At the time of the surgery, the veterinarian will make an incision in your pet’s abdomen, then remove the ovaries and/or uterus. The incision will then be closed with several layers of stitches, which will be removed after 10 to 14 days.

Most spay/neuter skin incisions fully heal within about 10 to 14 days. Don't bathe your pet or let them swim until their stitches fully heal.

HEALTHY HAPPY PETS

Though there is no age limit for getting your pet spayed or neutered, it is best to make them undergo the procedure at a young age. If your pet is in good health, the procedure is quick, safe and reliable, with multiple benefits for your pet.

While the ideal period to neuter/spay cats is before they are 5 months old, dogs can be spayed/neutered until 6 months of age. Some large breeds of dogs may benefit from waiting to neuter until 10-11 months of age. However, it's never too late to neuter a dog.
